In years past, extensive imaging such as CT scans and MRIs had to be conducted before robotic systems were used during knee replacement surgery. But thanks to incredible advancements in medical technology, we can now start your knee replacement surgery sooner, getting you on the path to a healthier, more functional life faster.
Smith and Nephew’s Cori Surgical System for knee replacements, now available at OrthoVirginia, is a pioneering robotic system that obtains all the information we surgeons need in real time during the procedure. No preoperative CT scans or MRIs are needed.
The Cori robot enables us to be extremely precise with placement of your knee implant. It also allows us to balance the soft tissue surrounding the knee, a process of ensuring that the muscles and ligaments around the knee aren’t carrying too much or too little of the force placed upon the implant. A better alignment and balancing can significantly improve function and life expectancy of your knee implant.
If you are considering undergoing a knee replacement, the advantages of the Cori Surgical System make it one of the best options available to you. The implant you receive will feel more natural due to our ability to keep your knee’s ligaments intact. For younger patients, a partial knee replacement can be revised to a full knee replacement in the future. This revision, if needed, will require less bone loss.
I am honored to be the first physician in the state of Virginia to be using the Cori Surgical System, raising the standard of care patients can expect to receive regarding knee replacements.
