Half of concussions are caused by sports. While people tend to think of sports like football and soccer as causing concussions, concussions can be caused by any sport if the conditions are right.
On many sports teams coaches and athletic trainers will have athletes take a baseline concussion test. If they are later suspected of having a concussion, they can be retested and see how the scores compare.
If you think you might have a concussion, tell your coach or athletic trainer. They can help you figure out if you need additional medical care. If you’re not sure, it’s always better to be safe and cautious with head injuries. You do not need to have passed out to have a concussion.
Rest is the main way to recover from a concussion. If you’re having trouble balancing, are dizzy, or have poor vision, you may also have a type of physical therapy called vestibular therapy to help reduce those symptoms.
