Bio

Dr. Bill Nordt is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in knee, shoulder and sports medicine injuries. He began practicing with OrthoVirginia in 1990 after finishing sports and knee fellowships from the Hughston Orthopaedic Clinic in Columbus, Georgia and Rene Marti, Amsterdam. He graduated from Rutgers Medical School and did his Internship and Residency at Montefiore Medical Center, The Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Dr. Nordt is passionate about caring for his patients and getting them back to the activities they enjoy. Understanding how the joints work, on the very fundamental and scientific level, has always been of great interest to him. From early on, Dr. Nordt has done research on both knee and shoulder injuries and has devoted his life to developing an expertise to treat his patients’ injuries. Dr. Bill Nordt holds a sports medicine fellowship from the Hughston Orthopaedic Clinic in Columbus, Georgia and knee fellowship with Rene Marti, in Amsterdam. The field of sports medicine has grown to encompass care for active patients of all ages. We strive to treat patients non-operatively whenever possible.

In the event surgery is necessary, Dr Nordt embraces the following principles:

  • Minimally invasive surgery
  • Restore normal anatomy
  • Accelerated recovery and return to activity

This applies to minor arthroscopic procedures as well as major knee and shoulder reconstructions. Our goal is always to return patients to their pre-injury level of activity, as quickly as possible. The key to this philosophy is minimizing the trauma of surgery, accurate surgical technique and aggressive rehabilitation. An active lifestyle is crucial to a healthy life.

Patient Testimonials

“I had been suffering from knee pain for a long time due to genetic arthritis in both knees. I was hesitant to have knee surgery because I was afraid so I tried to quell the pain with over-the-counter medicine and knee wraps. Nothing helped and the pain was really affecting the quality of my life so I opted for knee replacement surgery—I wish I had done it sooner—it made all the difference. I just set up an appointment to have my second knee replaced. It is totally worth it!” – Alexa Q.

“I looked for my surgeon for 2 years. Dr. Nordt fulfilled every requirement I had and more. He understood my need to be able to continue my sport, even at my age (69)! I have had absolutely no pain since waking from surgery. I am 7 weeks post op and walk with no limp, doing weight machines and bikes with PT and haven’t been on pain meds since week 2. I drive 4 hours to get to OrthoVirginia and look forward to June 2021 when we do the left knee. That’s right… I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO SURGERY!” – Jackie H.

“I was introduced to Dr. William Nordt at OrthoVirginia after tearing my quadriceps tendon in a basketball game in my mid 40’s. Dr. Nordt repaired my injury and became a friend. I highly recommend his services to anyone who wants professional, state of the art care with a personal touch. 20 years later, he is still providing quality care. . . and I’m still playing basketball! I was able to win a summer league championship recently and I’m still going strong 8 months after my PRP treatment. Thank you Dr. Nordt and OrthoVirginia! You are the best!” – Ron S.

“I would like to share a story about William E. Nordt, the Third, who can only be called royal, a prince of an orthopedic.  Why do I say this?  I write these words just short of age 79.  In December 2019, my left knee was replaced. Then in June 2020, I welcomed a new right knee. Please understand that for almost a decade, I fought against having knee replacements.  I wanted to break a ten-year record I’d been told about by the P.A. in Dr. Nordt’s office. “You can beat it,” John told me back in 2007. For over a decade I had twice yearly injections, three weeks in a row, equivalent to a lube job on rusty parts. This worked. But injections did not stop my legs from bowing, and it seemed unlikely I would ever stand with my legs against one other again. Please understand that since age ten, I have played competitive tennis, was a ranked player in Southern California, and a teaching pro in the USA, and in Malaysia. My goal was to die in very old age on a tennis court while running for a shot. But my bowed knees kept me from running except in a slow and awkward way. Desperation led me back to Dr. Nordt’s practice after getting shots elsewhere for five years. I only left his practice because P.A. John moved to South Carolina. This was the same period when the royal orthopedic, William the Third, learned an advanced, computerized way to replace knees. In September 2019, Dr. Nordt looked at my old file on his computer screen and said, ” Long time since we’ve seen you!”After the first surgery, I was back on the tennis court after eight weeks. And following the second replacement six months later, I could again run freely.  Do you have any idea what this means to a woman of 79?  To run fast, to change directions, to move forward and back, to pivot and know that beneath me are two strong, straight legs?  I’ve no words for the joy I feel with revitalized movement and a corresponding spirit.  Each week I practice tennis with four different men, all younger than I, running with the wind like my name Gale (though mine is wrongly spelled, Gail.)William E. Nordt, M.D. is well known in the Northern Neck of Virginia where I live. His name resonates as the orthopedic to see. What luck that my stars aligned in fall 2019 when I returned to his practice with OrthoVirginia.  Now, each time I step on a tennis court (or get out of bed in the morning), I give thanks to this unique man for his skills as an orthopedic surgeon, for his sense of humor, and for his exceptional appreciation of fine literature.” — Gail K.
