Cathleen Pigg, MPT

Cathleen Pigg graduated with a BA in Psychology from the University of Virginia and then went on to obtain a Masters in Physical Therapy at Western Carolina University. Over the course of her career, she has worked in the hospital setting in inpatient rehab and acute care. From there, she pursued her interest in outpatient physical therapy where she utilizes manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, and patient education in order to return her patients to their highest level of health and well-being. Outside of work, Cathleen enjoys travelling, spending time with family and friends, and hanging out with her dog.

Bio

Graduating with her Masters in Physical Therapy in 2002 from Western Carolina University, Cathleen started her career at Parham Doctors’ Hospital here in Richmond in the inpatient rehabilitation unit. There, she helped patients after stroke, amputation, fractures, joint replacements, and general debilitation to regain their strength and independence in order to return home safely and as independently as possible. Additionally, she saw patients in the acute care setting in every unit from intensive care to medical-surgical to the total joint replacement center.

In 2011, Cathleen began to focus on her interest in outpatient orthopedics. She believes that manual therapy is a key to alleviating pain and improving the quality of the soft tissue so it can perform at an optimum level. This combined with therapeutic exercise and patient education on the injury, posture, and body mechanics are important to improving the overall health and well-being of her patients.

She continues to further her knowledge in manual therapy techniques as well as extremity and spinal rehab. She has completed coursework in Mulligan technique, which are multiple manual therapy techniques that can be utilized to increase pain free range of motion. She has also taken coursework in muscle energy techniques, instrumented assisted soft tissue mobilization, the sacroiliac joint, therapeutic exercise, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, balance, and the rotator cu?. She also has an interest in ergonomics and has performed ergonomic assessments and provided talks at local businesses on the topic.

Outside of work, she enjoys travel, spending time with her friends, discovering new restaurants in the area, visiting and playing with her nieces, and hanging out with her dog, Oliver.
