Dr. Michael Wind is a hip and knee replacement specialist. He performs more joint replacement surgery than any other surgeon in central Virginia. He has been in practice with OrthoVirginia for over 15 years since beginning his career in 2009. Bio

Dr. Michael Wind is a hip and knee replacement specialist. He performs more joint replacement surgery than any other surgeon in central Virginia. He has been in practice with OrthoVirginia for over 15 years since beginning his career in 2009. Prior to starting practice Dr. Wind obtained advanced fellowship training in joint replacement surgery and in orthopedic sports surgery. Dr. Wind has chosen to focus his practice exclusively on hip and knee replacement surgery in order to provide expert care to his patients. He has published multiple papers in peer-reviewed journals detailing his many research projects. He works as a consultant for large multinational orthopedic companies and is a designer on one of the best-selling knee replacement systems in the world. He specializes in minimally invasive joint replacement surgery in the outpatient setting. With regard to knee surgery he performs the complete muscle and tendon sparing knee replacement procedure known as the SubV Knee (subvastus technique) in order to speed patient recovery and reduce pain. Dr. Wind performs that vast majority of his joint replacement surgery on an outpatient basis where patients are discharged home on the same day as surgery. He performs far and away the most outpatient joint replacement surgery in the metro Richmond area. In order to accomplish this Dr. Wind has focused on minimally invasive approaches to hip and knee replacement surgery. With regard to hip replacement he performs the minimally invasive anterior total hip. With the anterior approach to hip replacement the incision is placed on the front of the thigh and the surgery is performed quickly and precisely without the need to cut any significant muscle resulting in less pain and quicker recovery. In knee replacement he prefers the muscle and tendon sparing subvastus approach, also known as the SubV Knee. The subvastus approach is a muscle and tendon sparing technique for knee replacement that avoids cutting any significant muscle or tendon which results in less pain and more rapid mobilization after surgery. Dr. Wind was one of the first surgeons in central Virginia to perform robotic assisted joint replacement surgery over 10 years ago and has utilized multiple different robotic platforms during his career along with serving as a national design validation consultant for robotic assisted surgery.

Dr. Wind grew up and attended high school in Tappahannock, VA where he was an all-state athlete in multiple sports. He went on to become a college athlete and now enjoys exercise, fitness, and coaching his four sons in differing sporting activities. He feels honored and blessed to be able to offer elite orthopedic care in the area he has always considered to be home. On a day-to-day level it is the experience of witnessing patients overcome pain and return to an active lifestyle that motivates him and fills him with gratitude to have the privilege of making a real difference in the lives of those who trust him with their care.
