With personal athletic experience and a passion for sports, Dr. Kevin Sumida is especially interested in sports-related injuries, particularly complex problems of the shoulder and knee. He enjoys working closely with his patients to achieve common goals. He is an Assistant Professor at Georgetown School of Medicine and Adjunct Assistant Professor Uniformed Services University of the Health and Sciences School of Medicine. He regularly teaches and instructs sports medicine fellows from the Airforce and Georgetown residents. Dr. Sumida is currently serving as Chairman of the Orthopaedic Department at Virginia Hospital Center.
Growing up in an athletic family, Dr. Kevin Sumida always admired the local team physician for his dedication, knowledge, and compassion toward his patients. Following his example, Dr. Sumida and his siblings all pursued careers in different areas of medicine. After graduating with a BA from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, Dr. Sumida earned a medical degree from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine in Lexington. He remained in Lexington to complete his orthopedic surgery training before completing a fellowship in Sports Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In addition to his orthopedic practice, he is also a clinical assistant professor at Georgetown University.

Dr. Sumida’s specialties include ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair, articular cartilage injury, shoulder surgery, and total hip and knee replacement surgeries.
An active member of a number of professional medical organizations including the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, (AOSSM), Dr. Sumida is also on staff at the Virginia Hospital Center, where he participates in student and resident education and is currently serving as Chairman of the Orthopaedic Department. Dr. Sumida serves as the team physician for Marshall High School.
Dr. Sumida and his wife, a rheumatologist, have three sons. In their leisure time, the Sumidas enjoy hiking, jogging, biking, and active participation in their church.

Ed received a partial knee replacement using the Mako surgical robot in August 2020. After consulting with Dr. Sumida, Ed decided a partial knee replacement was the best course of action to resolve a worker’s compensation case. “Dr. Sumida took very good care of me throughout my time before and after my partial knee replacement,” said Ed. “The surgical process went smoothly and I have no complaints.” Ed is excited to get back to his normal life and perform his daily activities while continuing the recovery process.
