Dr. William Mook specializes in sports medicine, especially knee and shoulder surgery. Getting people back to what they love – whether it be elite athletics, work, recreational sports, or simple, everyday activities – drives his passion for orthopedics. He finds the tangible outcome that orthopedic surgery provides for his patients highly rewarding. In his free time, he plays golf, basketball, and softball. He also enjoys hiking, fishing, yoga, and spending time with his wife, three children, and dog.

Bio

Dr. Mook grew up fascinated with science and anatomy. In a letter to his “future self” written in high school, he accurately predicted his forthcoming career as an orthopedic surgeon. His year-round involvement in athletics, including basketball, baseball and golf, made sports medicine a perfect fit.

Getting people back to what they love – whether it be elite athletics, work, recreational sports, or simple, everyday activities – drives his passion for orthopedics. He finds the tangible outcome that orthopedic surgery provides for his patients highly rewarding.

Dr. Mook completed his undergraduate education at Virginia Tech where he graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise and minors in Biology and Chemistry. As an undergraduate he completed a research fellowship at the NIH in addition to completing additional course-work in human anatomy at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He received his medical degree from the University of Virginia where he was elected a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society and graduated with honors. He completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at Duke University. During his time at Duke, he was a team physician for Duke’s varsity athletic programs including the men’s basketball, lacrosse, and football teams. As a chief resident, he was chosen by his fellow residents for the John M. Harrelson Resident Teaching Award in recognition of the chief resident who contributed the most to their education and training. From there, he went on to a prestigious sports medicine fellowship at the Steadman Clinic and Steadman Philippon Research Institute in Vail, CO. While caring for both Olympic and professional athletes at the Steadman Clinic, he trained with leaders in sports medicine – including Marc Philippon, Robert LaPrade, Peter Millett, and Tom Hackett. As a fellow he also served as a physician for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard teams and has the privilege of continuing this role.

Returning to Northern Virginia is a homecoming for Dr. Mook, who grew up in Sterling. He and his wife now live in Ashburn with their three young children and their two dogs, Yorkshire Terrier Gus-Gus and silver lab Luna.. Outside of work, Dr. Mook’s many interests include golf, basketball, softball, hiking, and fly-fishing.
