Non-operative claw and hammertoe treatments

Claw toes are toes other than the big toe that are curled up. Hammertoes are toes with the middle joint always bent. Both types of condition can make finding shoes difficult or painful.

The first treatment for claw toe and hammertoe is to get shoes with a large area for the toes, so that the shoes won’t put pressure on the toes. The toe area of the shoes may need to be taller than usual since the toes aren’t flat.

You may use splints, braces, and padding to help keep your toes from rubbing against your shoes and to encourage them to straighten.

If the non-surgical treatments don’t provide enough relief, you may need surgery such as hammertoe repairs.
