Dr. Mark Hartley specializes in knee and shoulder care. A former U.S. Army surgeon who served in Operation Desert Storm, Dr. Hartley genuinely enjoys treating patients and positively impacting their lives.
A native Washingtonian, Dr. Mark Hartley developed a love for sports at a young age. After being treated by several orthopedic physicians during his days as a basketball player, he became attracted to the rewarding field of orthopedics. Upon earning a BA from Princeton University and an MS from Georgetown University, Dr. Hartley received a medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine. He then stayed on at Georgetown University Medical Center to complete both his surgical internship and orthopedic surgery residency. Before joining OrthoVirginia, Dr. Hartley served as Chief of the Total Joint Replacement Service at Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia, and also served as a Major and Orthopaedic Surgeon with the 350th Evacuation Hospital in Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Storm.
Having a deep appreciation for his profession and finding great satisfaction in watching the dramatic life turnaround many of his patients experience following surgery, Dr. Hartley genuinely enjoys treating patients and positively impacting their lives. His special interests include knee injuries, knee arthritis, knee replacement surgery, sports injuries, shoulder reconstruction and arthroscopic procedures. Particularly experienced with the latest in joint implants. Dr. Hartley has performed more than 2000 joint replacements, and a number of them have been minimally invasive hip and knee replacements. He has adopted the latest techniques and technology that allow rapid recovery of even outpatient total joint procedures.
An active member of several professional medical organizations, he has helped develop and supervise the state-of-the-art Total Joint Replacement Program at Reston Hospital Center. This program has earned recognition as a Center of Excellence by the Joint Commission of Hospital Accreditation, (JCAHO).
Dr. Hartley is a founding member of OrthoVirginia. Since 1994, he has worked to make OrthoVirginia a leader in orthopedic services in northern Virginia. He is a past president and Chairman of the Board of OrthoVirginia.
Dr. Hartley is intent on keeping his family at the center of his life. In his spare time he is passionate about boating, golf, and all his grandchildren. He and his wife, Mary Ellen, have three children.
