My Journey

Dr. Herring has always been a competitive athlete. While getting his bachelor’s at Washington & Lee University, he swam and played varsity water polo. He went from W&L to the University of North Carolina for his medical degree, and then to the Medical College of Virginia for his orthopedic surgery residency. After his residency, Dr. Herring did a specialty fellowship year of sports medicine and shoulder reconstruction and arthroplasty at Duke University.

Following his fellowship, he moved to Boone, NC and went into practice with his father. “It was fantastic to be able to work with him, and he taught me the moral and ethical basis of being a community orthopedist,” says Dr. Herring. While in Boone, he was a team physician at Appalachian State University.

From Boone, Dr. Herring returned to UNC as an assistant professor in sports medicine and shoulder reconstruction. He moved to Richmond in 2008 to continue his focus on sports medicine, knee, shoulder and elbow treatments.

Dr. Herring started endurance racing competitively around 2005, and then he moved into Ironman Triathlons. Racing has enabled him to travel around the world. He has competed in the Ironman World Championships twice, been part of Team USA twice in Ironman competitions, and in fall 2021 competed in the Half Ironman World Championships.

Dr. Herring races and competes at an elite level. He understands how difficult training is and how much athletes depend on their bodies.
