Bio

As a former starting midfielder and four-year scholarship recipient on the nationally ranked University of Virginia soccer team, Dr. Brantley Vitek naturally developed an interest in sports injuries. The son of an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Vitek earned a BA in Philosophy from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville before receiving his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. He then went on to complete a general surgery internship at the University of Colorado followed by an orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston.

Upon finishing his residency, Dr. Vitek returned to Northern Virginia and began practicing orthopedics with his father, a pioneer in arthroscopic knee surgery. After 4 years of practice partnered with his father, he merged that practice into OrthoVirginia. Now with over twenty years of experience practicing orthopedic surgery in the metropolitan D.C. area, and after many thousands of surgical procedures, Dr. Vitek has the knowledge and skills to take on just about any musculoskeletal problem. His background as a high-level athlete and team physician makes him particularly qualified to understand and effectively treat the injured athlete. Additionally, the many years he spent in the level one trauma center at Fairfax Hospital treating severe fractures and multitrauma patients has allowed him to acquire expertise in dealing with the worst of musculoskeletal injuries.

Dr. Vitek not only has an expertise in repairing injured joints but also reconstructing joints that have worn out. Over his 22 years of practice he has replaced hundreds of knees and hips with great success such that knee replacement surgery and hip replacement surgery remain some of his most common surgical procedures performed.

Dr. Vitek is a member of several professional medical organizations including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Virginia Orthopaedic Society and the Fairfax County Medical Society. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in both General Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine. He is currently the team physician for James Madison High School in Fairfax County and previously served as a team physician for DC United Major League Soccer team. Additionally, Dr. Vitek also served as the medical director of the 2007 ACC Soccer Tournament and was a member of the medical staff for the 1999 Women’s World Cup Soccer Tournament.

Along with his wife, Francine, Dr. Vitek resides in Oakton, Virginia. In his leisure time he enjoys skiing, backpacking, boating, fishing and playing soccer. Now that his two sons are grown, his long coaching career is over, but he still enjoys playing soccer himself on his senior soccer team.
